The new FITASC layout went a little slow but the targets offered something for all classes and overall were very enjoyable. Yellow and Orange courses were set with a lot of thought, Green and Red needed some help. New main layout along the road seem to work most of the time and added some socializing along the way which was nice. Overall had a lot of fun and can't wait till next year. One last thing maybe we could do without the cold weather next time. Frank

We thought the main was a "bummer". Like shooting in down town New York City at lunch hour. All we were missing were the yellow Taxis. Way to commercial for me. Sporting clays was set up to be more like hunting. I saw nothing there that reminded me of that. Later, Maxey #522735

Member Posts: 35 (10/31/11 5:02 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	A gentleman stepped up to the audience took out his baton tapped it twice and began conducting a true symphony of target presentations This event was called the 2011 K-Kup by maestro Jeff Foster. The target presentations could only be duplicated by their peers, the dove, quail, teal, duck, pheasant, rabbit. The true sole of sporting clays. I can only hope the Nationals took note for next years main. The KKup was Sporting Clays at it's finest. Thank you Jeff.

Executive Member Posts: 233 (10/31/11 5:09 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Work precluded my presence at the Nationals this week. I am curious though at the very high scores in all the events. Particularly, the K-Kup. To see such scores makes me wonder, not that so many had an outstanding performance but that the targets were softened to the point of simplicity. Since I was not there could someone analyze for me, the target sets in the major events? I mean was there anything memorable where you said, "wow, that is a clever presentation, or Wow, what a big bird! Or Wow, he really tricked me with that target set up. Etc. While I realize that many derive pleasure at putting up a nice high score, when achieved on targets that require no more skill than to be monotonously consistent defeats the entire essense of Sporting where one must use, to paraphrase Steve Schultz and Target Line, "All the tools". As I was not there, someone please critique the target sets. No need for a station by station account; just answer the question: 6 months or a year from now, will you remember antyhting about the targets besides your score? Congrats to all who participated and doubly for those who exceeded their expectations through hard work, practice and preparation. N

Executive Member Posts: 515 (10/31/11 5:41 PM) Senior Member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Nadim: The K Kup targets were not "easy" but were certainly more user friendly than what we've seen in some past years. There was something for everyone. Towers , rabbits , chondelles and very few trap birds (hurrah)....maybe a few too many incomers....but nothing silly. The 20g and SuperSporting were the highlights of the week. The 20 was no longer part of the 20/28/410/pump/SxS five way ...... rodeo. The 20 was out on a field and had 12g type targets including 3 towers. No more skeet in the woods.Several targets in the 40+ range. Supersporting was great ...fun targets that were --again-- not easy but tricky enough to make you stay on your game. And not having to repeat the pairs was heaven. Fitasc was OK but the targets at the Texas State Fitasc were better. 28 and 410 were feel good targets....OK for those small guns. Each had one tower that was a separator.

Executive Member Posts: 303 (10/31/11 8:08 PM) Senior Member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Nadim, it appeared to me the scoring in the Main event was the result of superior shooting not just soft targets. IMO the Rippetoe's Green Course was overall the most difficult, station 5 I believe was a true pair of teal hidden by a skeet barrier that were hauling the mail. I watched several of the top guns struggle with this presentation. The North side of Green played hard into the wind on Friday morning and it took its toll, but nothing over the top. I thought McAlpines targets on the Red were genious, a true pair of incomers into the wind on Sunday (station 3 or 4) that really got you out of your comfort zone. A true pair off a lift (90 and standard) that were difficult to judge. Mike's targets looked straight forward but in the end were line critical. Cherry commented to me on Sunday night how he really had to work his gun barrel under the targets on Red. The Orange course was another cool course, station one had a 90 outbound from the right that was the 2nd of a report pair that was SUDDEN when it appeared! Station 5 I think it was had a left to right crosser that appeared alot further than it really was! I for one really enjoyed Orange and thought that Neil Chadwick showed more variety than I have seen from him in the past. While Yellow yielded some higher scores - hell it wasn't easy by any means - they were not typical Brian Ash targets. IMO, some cool variety! I understand the concerns about the traffic jams on the Main but we NEVER shot into the sun and thats always been a problem in San Antonio, I will take the congestion and no sun any day. Several of our local guys shot very well. I think Bobby had one of if not the highest score on Green followed by a strong Green score by Rick Storey. As to be expected Byron Justice and Jeff Derrington shot steady and well. Clark Wallraven had a very high finish in the Senior concurrent and I am pretty sure Rick will be in the Senior Concurrent next year and he will be a force - good shooting guys. Mark Tipton's -98 on the K-cup GREAT JOB - I heard very few complaints and actually thought the Main event targets were the best I had experienced! I am always amazed at the job done in San Antonio just routing this large of a crowd. Randy

Member Posts: 35 (10/31/11 8:56 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The ingenuity of the K-Kup was that it was mostly wind-neutral. For some odd reason, Jeff Foster worked with the weather forecast (light SW wind for most of the day on Thursday, followed by viscous N wind on Thursday night and Friday, followed by another wind switch on Saturday with calming on Sunday). The scores were high, a testament to how good a lot of the shooters are, but the set had variety and wasn't the normal quarter-left, quarter-right set that seems to happen year after year in that part of the property. He gave a bit of belly and dome to make it more friendly to all the classes. I hope to see Jeff setting more of the events next year (I think he would knock our socks off with a 100-bird FITASC set...hint hint). On the Main, the Green and Red courses had the most chest hair and some of the more memorable stations (long, quartering report rabbits on Green was my favorite). Putting all the mains but Green on the same cart path was painful but did increase my ability to ingest dust and maneuver a golf cart. Great job NSCA and the target setters. matt.

The overall competition and quality of abilities seemed to be the best that I have observed. I thought the main targets were excellent in all courses. Maybe too many chondells etc on the Orange,but the setter loves them. All around about the best Nationals that I have experienced.

I shot the K-Kup, main, all subgauges, 5stand and super sporting and there is no doubt that this was the best overall set of targets at Nationals that I have ever seen. I saw only one bad target all week and that was a 130 yard teal in the Top Gun Shootoff!

Member Posts: 86 (11/01/11 7:12 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	This was the best Nationals that I've attended. I've missed one since !999. All of the targets were the right color. Does anyone remember that happening before. All of the Staff deserves a great deal of credit for working so hard and doing a great job. Seeing all the targets means that missing them is my fault and I can only blame myself. WELL DONE BY ALL WHO CONTRIBUTED, Target Setters, Staff, and everyone who made this largest and best shoot possible!

Member Posts: 58 (11/01/11 11:26 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Generally, the targets were too soft that I saw - K Kup - someone shot a perfect 100. anytime that happens, it's usually means a soft course. 410 and 28 were too soft. I say all this, even though i shot very poorly for most of the week. I just tend to fare better when the targets are set medium-hard difficulty. I miss more easy targets on a relative basis.....thought the 2010 nationals targets were much better across all events.

Super sporting was fun. Yellow, Orange, and Red were all good well thought out courses. Green - please stop Rippitoe at the Red River next year. Many people are weary of his all the spring you can tighten hard to see targets.

Pretty open area and not much to work with. David, you set the Green course and again not much to work with in that area short of some block buildings and wide open space. Now, Go Do That Voodoo That You Do So Well". Well they did just that. Well done Mike. No commit David. Super Sporting course. Glad I got in it. Lots of fun and I think I kept everyone close by entertained wondering if I would change chokes or not. LOL. Orange and Green courses. Well thought out and well placed targets. Great presentations on both. 20 ga. course. Again, well done. Made me work for every target. Squading. Couldn't ask for a better bunch to shoot with. When the Super Seniors shoot well, which they did, it means you could see the targets, which you could. That is the first and most important thing, being able to see the targets. My favorite course was the Green. I think Rippitoe did a great job. Everyone said take you big bullets and full chokes but I sure didn't need them. You needed some gun speed and he sure would suck you up to the line and then you were screwed if you went there but that is his job. I hope he sets the green next year. To the high scores, Nadim you are the only person I have heard complain and I have been on the grounds since the start and you were not even here. I thought it was great to see people smiling and spending money. I don't care how soft you say the course was Kruger's 100 in the 410 is stout, stout, stout. A 50 in Super Sporting, awesome, a 100 on the K-cup, awesome, great shooting. If you complain about missing easy targets I have one word for you......................Mental Game.......................... See you next year, Driscoll Otto 527701

I thought all of the target setters did a great job with the area they had to work with. The K Kup may have been a little soft in some peoples opinion but even if so, I really enjoyed the targets that Jeff set. It wasn't that redundant year after year boring quartering trap shoot it has been in the past. I thought he really put some effort in to making it completely different...A+ Jeff! The 5 stand in my opinion was well thought out too. It has to be a target setters nightmare to set a 100 bird 5 stand with absolutely no terrain at all. I went in to it not expecting the targets to be very good. I was wrong. I don't know who set the five stand but my hat's off to them. A good mix of quartering, incoming, outgoing, crossing etc. Overall, not too hard but it demanded proper technique on a lot of the pairs. Wish I would have shot it better. The mains were enjoyable for the most part. I know the new road made it easier for the workers to get to traps etc for loading reasons. However, I thought it was too congested for traveling safely from one station to another(let alone irritating for whoever happened to be shooting at the time). I felt like the areas used for shooting the mains left the target setters with limited terrain to work with. However, I do think all the setters on the mains did a terrific job with what limited terrain they were given. They all had a good variety of targets. I dont feel like there was a lot of effort put forth in to designating where the mains would be located though. I liked the terrain that was used in the last several years better. You could tell it was set up this year to get us "sheep" through as fast as possible rather than for giving the setters quality areas for setting more unique targets. Kind of a bummer for a shoot of this magnitude and importance. Other than that, I thought everything went fairly smooth. I know now that I need to learn how to shoot towers......all of them!....I really stunk it up this year. Dave

Yes overall soft except for the green which was more like you would see at a US Open. Yellow and orange were 80% friendly, both had some testy targets. Hauling towers and midi's. Red was the most balanced. Super sporting was excellent and I thought runable. 5 stand was well done and wind made some targets a little over the top. The fitasc was a waste of money. I like new style and have shot it before but when the had all classes shooting the same parcours can you say skeet. You should never be able to use a skeet choke for fitasc! Nice new road with stations too close on both sides made for major traffic and dust. Move the damn stations away from the road. Old problems, stopping shooters to reload traps. Main events running late. We need fewer B squads and more stations. Esp if they want to increase main event to 400 targets. I would like the main to be 300 targets over 3 days. It would save a day of work and expenses.

What is interesting basically the same folks make up the leader board! go figure!! But what makes this year much better, the masses that paid the same entry fee as the elite had a much more enjoyable time , infact most of the masses paid their own way they do not have sponsors. To me the nationals is like going to the fair for the first time when I was a kid, it is an experince all it's own. We have a great time seeing all of our shooting freinds and vendors we have met over the years. It is nice shooting good scores even though you don't really stand much of a chance to win, no matter what you do to the targets only a very small percentage of shooters have even a slight chance to stand on the podium,so why not let the rest of us get a chance to hone our skills on shootable targets. This is an event that as long as I have the health and finances I won't miss, but many will if it gets to rediculous and no fun to shoot. This is a great sport!!! And as it should be the best rose to the top!!! Congratulations to Bill McGuire and the rest of the shooters for great performances. Buster

There was plenty of parking, a great vendor's row...even bought a new gun, the food was tolerable and the lines to get it weren't too bad, ample opportunity to get a few practice clays in before the "real deal". The targets were tough but fair. My only complaint has to due with the apparent lack of effort to keep the dust down in areas other than on the courses themselves. The personal clays carts trailer lot over by the FITASC events was horrible. Loading and unloading was an unpleasant event every day. I only saw one tractor pulling a water sprayer around. Wish they'd had another....
